Homecoming, September 26, was a very successful day for the Maine West gridmen. After losing their Homecoming for the past two years, Maine West finally won by beating Deerfield 21‑20.
Maine West found it a little rougher against Glenbrook South last Saturday, as they lost to the Titans of Glenbrook 22‑7.
In the Homecoming game against Deerfield, the first quarter was scoreless. But Maine West scored first in the second quarter on a four‑yard touchdown run by Jim Hanselman '71. The extra point kick by Jeff Liggett '72 was good and West led 7‑0.
The gridmen scored again late in the second quarter on a oneyard touchdown run by Larry Portman '71. Again the extra point kick by Liggett was good, and at the half West led 14‑0.
Deerfield came out fired‑up in the second half, as they scored once in the third quarter from the 1‑yard line and once again at the beginning of the fourth on a 67‑yard touchdown pass, to tie the game at 14‑14.
With just minutes left in the game, Maine West regained their lead on a five‑yard touchdown run by fullback Keith Moranz '71, Liggett kicked his third extra point of the game. That proved to be the winning point.

With Maine West on top 21‑14 and just 27 seconds showing on the clock, it looked like the game was over. But on the next play West fumbled and a Deerfield defenseman picked it up on his own 33‑yard line and ran it back 67 yards for a touchdown. Now West only led by one, 21‑20.
On the next play Deerfield elected to go for the two points to win, instead of a tie. The pass from Deerfield quarterback John Keane '71 was right to the intended receiver, but the West defensemen got their just in time to knock it to the ground, and Maine West hung on to win 21‑20 before a very excited Maine West Homecoming crowd.
Last Saturday was a different story against Glenbrook South. South opened the scoring early in the first quarter on a safety.
That was the only score in the first quarter as the Glenbrook Titans led 2‑0.
All the breaks went to the Titans way in the second half as they scored two touchdowns. The first came in the third quarter when the Titans scored from the 1‑yard line. The second TD came in the final quarter on a two‑yard run, which marked a 95‑yard drive. That was all the scoring in the second half, as Maine West couldn't get on the scoreboard. The final score was Glenbrook South 22, Maine West 7.
