"The Shape of Schools of the 70's," this year's theme for American Education Week, will be demonstrated in a variety of events throughout the week of October 25‑31.
Traditionally, the President of the United States has proclaimed American Education Week every year, and it was originally started 49 years ago. The founders of the week were the National Education Association and the American Legion in 1921.
Mr. Herman Rider, principal, will participate in a flag raising ceremony headed by Mrs. Lucille Stiles, Chairman of the Home Economics Department. During the week of Oct. 25‑31, Maine West will fly its American Education Week flag below the American flag in front of the school.
Throughout the week emphasis will be focused on student activity. Pep Club will be making signs that will be exhibited along with poster displays.

The Future Teachers' Club, sponsored by Mrs. Joan Plock, has centered a discussion of the purpose of AEW for their next meeting.
Individual art displays and works of Mr. John Craigle's Photography II class will be exhibited in E‑wing for student viewing, and Mr. Willis Lindeman, head librarian, will encourage participation by distributing AEW bookmarks in the library.
WMTH, sponsored by Mr. Daryl Schultz, will publicize the activities of AEW on the air to familiarize the public with the whole purpose of the program. Mr. Gerald Hug, music teacher, also agreed to make a spot announcement on AEW at next Friday's football game.
When asked what the purpose of American Education Week at Maine West is, Mr. George Blanas, Art Department chairman and AEW director, replied, "It is a time for students and teachers to re‑examine the goals of education in the 70's."
