United Nations Week, October 19 through October 25, was highlighted yesterday, October 22, with a speech given by Mr. Ulf Scholdstrom, the Swedish Vice Consul. A Social Science forum, "A Salute to the United Nations on the Twenty-fifth Anniversary" was held third period in the Maine West auditorium.
"Sweden was chosen to represent United Nations Week because it has been involved in international peace movements within the United Nations since its conception 25 years ago," explained Mr. William Kiddle, forum director at Maine West.
"Having Sweden as the center of the forum represents an interesting balance because of its neutrality in world affairs. Sweden can give an unbiased view of the United States and current crisis and international disputes," stated Mr. Eric Edstrom, chairman of the Social Science Department.
Sweden was also chosen for this forum because of three Swedish men's interest in the United Nations. Dag Hammarskjol, the second Secretary General to the United Nations, died during the Congo uprising. Count Folk Bernadotte, United Nations mediator in the Middle East, was assassinated by Jewish terrorists in 1940, and Gunar Jaring who was ambassador to Moscow and is now a mediator in the Middle East.
