Forrest Byrom was recently removed from the Niles North football team because of his refusal to remove his helmet during the playing of the National Anthem. This action was to serve as his personal protest against the Viet Nam war. The question is whether or not the coach was justified in the removal of the player and if Forrest was right in the method of protest he used.
Sue Bachmura '72 ‑ "There are ways of protesting against the war in Viet Nam, but I feel that he was wrong because he was degrading his country."
Chris Petz '71 ‑ "I don't think that he should have been kicked off the team; but if he refused to take it off, I think he should have been put on a probationary period."
Karen Enzenbacher '73 - "I think that if he didn't want to stand and take his helmet off for the National Anthem that it was his business and he shouldn't have been kicked off the team."

Debbie Buntenbach '74 "If it would have happened here at Maine West I think that many of the kids would be mad about it because it's our National Anthem and all people should have respect for it."
Lynette Finkler '72 ‑ "He could have expressed his antiwar feelings without disloyalty to his country."
Darlene Carlile '71 ‑ "I think his protest was out of place; there is a time and place for everything and a school football game is just not the place."
Lori Rowells '73 ‑ "I feel that the boy should have a right to express how he feels, but at a football game it doesn't seem to be the right time and place. Getting kicked off the team should show him that he did the I wrong thing."
