Glenbrook N Surrenders;
Niles N Gains Tie

Surprising Niles North may have taken the Warriors out of the Central Suburban League race last week by tying 14‑14. Two weeks ago the Warriors assured themselves of their finest season in recent years with a 7‑6 triumph at Glenbrook North.

Niles North used a fine running game to dominate Maine West last week, but West made repeated comeback efforts to get the tie. The Vikings used the first quarter to drive the ball a total of 80 yards for a score. Maine West, however, started their own drive late in the half which ended with quarterback Dave Arnswald '71 plunging in for a score from the 1‑yard line. Jeff Liggett '72 put the Warriors ahead 7‑6 with a point after kick.

The Vikings again snatched the lead after the halftime break with eight points to put Maine West down 14‑7. It was do or die in the last quarter and West did it. Jim Hanselmann '71 fired a pass to Mike Bistany '71 who scored on a play that covered 52 yards. Again Liggett kicked in a point to determine the final score at 14‑14. Liggett has been perfect all season in kicking the point after touchdown attempts.

In the Glenbrook North game the Warriors again had to come back after trailing. Glenbrook's Spartans scored in the opening quarter; but before the half was over, Maine West had the lead. Keith Moranz '71 drove in from the 1‑yard line to tie the game, and then Liggett won it 7‑6. Maine West never let the Spartans start a drive in the second half and held on for their second one point win.

New Trier West appears to be the team with the best chance of winning the championship. Their defense has averaged one touchdown per game off of them. The Warriors must next battle New Trier, a game which will decide the fate of this year's gridmen.

Last week's results:
MAINE WEST 14, Niles North 14
Maine South 57, Niles West 22
New Trier W 27, Deerfield 0
Glenbrook S 14, Glenbrook N 0
