Competition Opens In Intramurals

Intramurals are considered to be an important part of Maine West's athletic department. Boys can engage in football, cross country, tennis, golf, basketball, water basketball, wrestling, volleyball, track, weightlifting, softball, table tennis, and swimming.

Twelve students competed in the double elimination tennis tournament. On the freshman level Jim Lauffenburger was champion and Terry Wolf runnerup. Joe Thimm won the championship and Doug Meister was runnerup on the sophomore level. Rick Felde reigned champion with Cy Berg the runnerup in the junior competition.

Lake Opeka was the site for the golf tournament. Steve Kisslinger won the freshman competition with an 18 hole score of 61. Rod Laage with a score of 64 and Mike Buckley with a 65 were runnerups.

The sophomore champion was Bill Tramel with a score of 82. Barclay Herman came in as runnerup with an 18 hole score of 85.

Five teams competed in the senior level of the flag football tournament. Coach Don Olson's ninth period class defeated Coach Tom Frederick's ninth period class by a score of 28‑8. The championship team consisted of Dennis Willison, Bill Besenhofer, Bruce Kerr, Gary Klein, Jim Krumpolz, Dave Nelson, Tom Reeves, Russ Smith, George Woodley, Mark Berquist, Mark Dombrowski, and Chris Wills.

Coach Frederick's ninth period class defeated Coach Olson's ninth period class 13‑8 for the junior championship. The team consisted of Steve Mammoser, Brad Vance, Chuck Martino, John Leer, John Woodley, Chris Mielke, Ken Schroeder, and Glenn Kurfess.
