Maine West High School will host the Illinois Music Education Association District 7 Music Festival on Saturday, November 14, from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Approximately 700 students will be representing 30 high schools in the northern part of Illinois. Mr. Robert Kuite, chairman of the Maine West Music Department, is the host director.
The highlight of the day will be a concert at four o'clock by a 150 piece orchestra, a 150 piece band, and a 300 voice chorus. The morning and early afternoon will be devoted to rehearsals for the three groups. The concert will be held in the Maine West Gymnasium, and admission is open to the public. Students will be admitted for $.50 and adults for $1.
Each participating high school is sending approximately 10 of its best students to represent the school in the activities. Each student has the recommendation of his band director and has also had an individual audition. Chris Royal '71. The orchestra will be directed by Mr. Willis Page of Drake University of Des Moines, Iowa. Selections will be played from "Fingal's Cave Overture" by Mendelssohn, "Porgy and Bess" by Gershwin, and "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" by Bach.
Representing Maine West in the band will be Heather Brown '71, Jim Sedlack '71, Steve Bullmer '71, Margie Cameron '71, Doug Kuite '71, Beth Heller '71, Doug Lauffenburger '71, and Mark Enggas '71. The band will be directed by Mr. Harry Haines of Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois. Selections will be made from "Symphonic Dance Number 3" by Williams, "Symphonic March" by Bonelli, "Festival Overture" by Shostakovich, and "Jalouise" by Gade.
Singers representing Maine West in the chorus will be John Behnke '71, Jan Jarvis '71, Shirley Frank '72, Sharon Siegfort '71, Steve Mirro '72, Ned Peterson '71, Jeannie Miller '71, Cheryl Boeckenhauer '72, Ben Adair '72, Tom Parker '72, and Nancy Spiegler '71. The chorus' guest director will be Mr. James Wiltz of Dixon High School, Dixon, Illinois.
