New Club Members Help Plan Activities

Maine West Handgun Club is very proud to be able to say that it is a first ‑ it is the only high school club of its kind in the United States. Presently the club has 30 members, both boys and girls, and welcomes any students who have an interest in firearms. Meetings are held on alternate Mondays and are devoted to discussions of the handgun for hunting and target shooting. At times outside speakers address the club meetings and offer their expertise. Two such speakers were Officer Lawrence Zumbrock of the Des Plaines Police Department and Mr. Jerry Foynor, manager of Johnson's Sporting Goods, who spoke to some of the members last year.

The club does not collect dues but suggests that members join the National Rifle Association. The club's president is David Beeson '72 and is sponsored by Mr. Robert Curtis. Mr. Curtis is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and hold certificates from the organization as pistol and rifle instructor.

Orchesis, the modern dance club, held its clinics October 19, 20, and 21 and its tryouts October 22 and 23. Thirteen girls were chosen from the 40 applicants. The new members are Roxanne Miller '73, Carol Sloan '74, Margaret Bednarz '74, Mary Freemire '73, Barb Slater '71, Bernadette Binder '74, Debbie Schimmel '74, Cathy Spellbrink '71, and Robert Bober '72. Others are Donna Rostowski '72, Jan Rudy '72, Jane Eisfeldt '73, and Cathy Sherman '73.

The tryouts consisted of a dance composition, containing basic skills, which was choreographed by the Orchesis members. The first day of tryouts resulted in cutting 20 girls from the original 40. The next day seven were droped with the 13 new members remaining. The girls were judged by Miss Karen Kenyon, Miss Susan Koester, Jan Fendius '71, president; Lorie Anderson '72, vice‑president, and Nancy Dema '72, secretary.

Orchesis will perform at halftime during one of this year's basketball games. The club also plans to present a show the first weekend of May which shall be choreographed by its members.
