Warrior Willie Debuts Tonight

Pep Club has once again introduced Willie the Warrior and his tribe to the spectators of Maine West's sports events. Mike Pruitt '71 who has played the role of Willie will make his last appearance as Willie tonight at the M‑Club ‑ Faculty game. Wayne Gyssler '72, who was a member of Willie's tribe, will take the place of Mike as Willie starting after the game tonight.

The rest of the members of the tribe are Dan Long '72, Mark Dunevant '72, Dave Gano '72, and John Dini '71.

Costumes, which were designed by Peg Winkelman '71, consist of dark slacks and shirts trimmed with gold fringe. Indian figures done in all colors of paint decorate the gold vests which they wear. Their faces are painted with different colors of war paint, and feathers are worn on their heads to finish off the Warrior effect. Willie wears a long headdress so that he is distinguished from his tribe because he is their leader.

Willie and his tribe perform along with the cheerleaders at all the games. They are out there to try and help the cheerleaders get more participation from the crowd of spectators.

Peg Winkelman, student sponsor of Willie the Warrior, states, "We would like to make Willie a tradition in helping the cheerleaders promote spirit."

Talking with some members of the Willie tribe, several had something to say about their feelings concerning Willie the Warrior. Mike Pruitt, presently Willie, has this to say, "Our purpose is to amuse the crowd and help the cheerleaders to get the crowd going. But there is not much spirit in the crowds; even though we can always just sit back and watch the game, the cheerleaders still have to put up with it."

"I think that out there people identify us as a team, and we do create enthusiasm and spirit for Maine West. At first, people thought that we were a gag; but now they are responding to us more," stated Wayne Gyssler, the future Willie the Warrior.
