Seniors Dave Carl, Marilyn Kalapathy, and Kate Evans will represent Maine West on NBC's "It's Academic." An advance taping of the show was made on Monday, November 23, at the Chicago Merchandise Mart where the NBC studio is located.
"A group of 15 students with good grades was sent down to NBC last spring," said Miss Ruth Nickelson, faculty supervisor for the program. "The network asked them about 60 or 70 questions about different subjects. The three students who answered the most questions were chosen to be on the show."
Approximately 35 students accompanied the team to the studio. When asked about the support of the school, Marilyn Kalapathy remarked, "I was glad to see that quite a few kids went down with us including for freshman cheerleaders who went voluntarily. It was good to be backed up." Marilyn also added, "We did not win, but we had an outstanding team and did the best we could."

The team received a $25 savings bond for the school as a consolation prize. The winning team received a $100 savings bond.
A chartered bus, which left Maine West at 6:30 p.m., took the students to the studio. Everyone returned at 9:30 p.m.
"It's Academic" is aired at 5 p.m. every Saturday afternoon. "The tape should be shown in about a month, although no one is yet aware of the exact date," said Miss Nickelson. Maine West competed against Bloom Township High School and Luther South High School. Anyone interested in seeing the team play should check the television listings.
