On November 25 the Maine West varsity wrestling team opened their 1970‑71 season with a 29‑13 loss to the Prospect Knights.
Maine West started strong as they took a quick 13‑0 lead at the end of three matches. Fred Gano '73 started it all at 98 pounds, when he pinned his opponent in the second period. Bruce Beam '71 followed at 105 pounds pinning his man at 54 seconds of the third period. Then at 112 pounds Ken Gustafson '71 won 6‑2.
Prospect proceeded to capture the last nine matches. It started when Dave Gano '72 was defeated 4-2 in the 119-pound category. Craig Barringer '72 then lost 5-2; Mike Bistany '71 was beaten 9-2; Carl Sjostrand '72 was defeated 7-1; Gary Klein '71 was shut

out 5-0. Marshall Mayer '72 was defeated 9-4; Leon Wilkens '72 was pinned at 40 seconds of the first period; Lee Popowski '72 was beaten 3-1 in a close match; and heavyweight Jim Michalak '72 lost 6-1 to end the meet.
Winning their last nine matches Prospect defeated the Warriors 29‑13.
The junior varsity squad had better luck as they defeated Prospect 27‑17. The Warriors were only up by five points going into the final match heavyweight, and all the Knights needed for a tie was a pin. The pin did come, but Prospect was on the receiving end.
Tonight all four levels in wrestling will travel to Oak Park in their second non‑conference meet.
