Maine West Needs Love

Student Council needs help. Student Council can become relevant to the student body and their wishes only through the improvement of the status of each individual as an individual.

In a school of our size, it is difficult for a large organization such as Student Council to relate to each individual. The members of Council feel a strong desire to help people in any way. Many of their failures are not due to the attitudes in Council. They are due, often, to a lack of support from the student body.

People, in a large group, tend to be cold towards one another. Their emotions are well hidden by synthetic or plastic actions. As an example people often greet each other with "Hi, how are you?"; but before an answer can be given, the people are separated. Thus, we have no show of feelings, no exhibition of people showing they care. People must care. People must unite to destroy prejudice, hate, and irrational thinking.

A show of emotion is frowned upon by society. If somebody were a good friend of mine and of the same sex, I would not tell this person that I loved him. This is socially unacceptable, and I would be branded "weird." And yet, I feel a great emotion toward this person. How can I express my feelings toward this person? How can I acknowledge his friendship?

Can society continue to grow cold toward the needs and feelings of the individual? I do not think so. I hope that I can become a better person by helping any individual. By helping a friend I find I am really helping myself. As a poster on a wall said, "If I can stop one heart from breaking, then I would not have lived in vain."

In an effort to reach the individual, Student Council has proposed a marathon rap session. We hope through this rap session that we could start to get people together again to show they care. I hope we can.

With all my heart I love you,
Larry Portman
