Cagemen Reign Over Conference

By whomping Niles North, Palatine, Forest View, and Glenbrook North, and by losing a close game to Arlington, Maine West has finally shown some class on the basketball court.

With Dennis Willison '71 and George Woodley '71 hitting close to 75 per cent of their shots and Tom Kummer '71, Fred Horn '71 and Bruce Kerr '71 rebounding between themselves a total of about 35 per game, Maine West seems to have the experience and skill to have an outstanding season.

With a 40‑12 lead at half‑time against Palatine on December 5, Coach Gaston Freeman decided to let his reserves play in most of the second half. Palatine, plagued by double‑dribbles, faulty passing, poor shooting, and inferior rebounding, were outclassed by a final score of 81‑34.

The night before the varsity demolished Niles North 70‑43. With the fine shooting of Willison and Woodley and a taunt defense by most of the players, Niles didn't have a chance.

On Friday, December 11, the varsity won again. This time the loser was New Trier West. The score of 69‑59 was the final, but at one point Maine West was ahead by 21 points. The highlight of the night occurred when one of New Trier's starters had to leave the game because he had two of his teeth come out.

The sophomore team defeated Niles North and Palatine by wide margins also. Niles North bowed 58‑43 while Palatine was defeated 59‑28. These two wins helped to raise their season record to 5‑0. Their encounter against New Trier, though, turned out to be their first loss. This loss made their conference record 2‑1.

The freshman team has a 3-1 record for the season and a 1-0 conference record. Their first conference win was over Niles North by a score of 53-44.

The sophomores compete against Glenbrook North tonight here at Maine West with the starting time at 6:45 p.m. The varsity game, pitting our Warriors against Glenbrook North, will follow.

Coach Freeman has scheduled his team in a Christmas tournament this year. The tournament, hosted by Proviso West, has many other fine teams participating besides Maine West. A sweep of this tournament could prove to be quite profitable to the team.
