Grapplers Roll On,
Win Four Straight

After dropping their first meet of the season, the Maine West varsity wrestlers have won three meets in a row. Last Friday at home they downed the New Trier West Cowboys 23‑19 in their first conference meet of the season. One week before, the grapplers came up with a double victory, squeezing by Oak Park on Friday 23‑22 and coming back home on Saturday to defeat Morton West 25‑18.

Against New Trier West last Friday the grapplers put together two pins, three decisions, and two ties which was enough for the victory.

Highlights of the meet were Bruce Beam '71 who wrestled at 98 pounds for the first time this season. Beam did his job as he pinned his man in the third period. For Beam that was his third pin so far this season, and he now holds a personal record of four wins without a defeat.

Other Warriors picking up valuable team points were Brad Vance '72, who pinned his opponent in the first period at 126 pounds. Dave Gano '72 won 8‑0 at 119 pounds, Gary Klein '71 won 9‑2 at 145 pounds, Leon Wilkens '72 beat his opponent 13‑9 at 167 pounds; Gary Bottan '72 tied 2‑2 at 112 pounds, and Rick Veith '72 tied 2‑2 at 132 pounds.

On December 5 the varsity grapplers held their first home meet of the season against Morton West. Maine West jumped off to a 13‑0 lead, as Fred Gano '73 won 6‑5 at 98 pounds. Beam pinned his opponent at 105 pounds, and Ken Gustafson '7j pinned his man in the 112‑pound category.

Morton West fought back in the following matches, and Maine West held a slim 20‑19 lead going into the heavyweight match. Warrior John Herter '71 found no trouble with his heavyweight opponent, as he pinned him at 2:55, this giving the Warriors five points and a victory.

Morton West was penalized in the heavyweight bout, and thus lost a point. So the final score was Maine West 25, Morton West 18.

At Oak Park on December 4 the Warrior wrestlers got off to another fine start as they took a 16‑3 lead at the end of the 126‑pound match. The grapplers were never behind in the meet as they came out on the winning side of a 23‑22 score.

Tonight all four levels in wrestling will travel to Glenbrook North for their second conference meet this year. Then tomorrow afternoon the grappiers will host Wheeling in a non‑conference meet.
