President Larry Portman will be graduating at the semester, and vice‑president Jerry Palarz will move up to direct Council activities for the remainder of the school year. A special incouncil election will be held to determine the new vice‑president. Interested candidates who met the above qualifications were asked this week to fill out petitions. The winner will be announced on Monday, and he will take office on January 28.
Dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism, according to Maine West faculty members and the Senior Class, are the four characteristics best found in seniors Amy Robertson and Dave Nelson, winners of this year's Good Citizenship awards. Amy received a pin and certificate from the Daughters of the American Revolution, along with a chance to enter the contest at the state level. The Sons of the American Revolution awarded Dave the Good Citizenship Medal.
Starting Wednesday, January 20, and lasting for three days, Maine West will hold its semester final exams. There will be three tests a day, each lasting 90 minutes. On Wednesday students who have classes during periods 3, 9, and 4 will be tested. The first period lasts from 8:10 to 9:40, the second from 9:50 to 11:20, and the last from 11:30 to 1 p.m. On Thursday class periods 1, 7, and 6 will have tests. Friday will be the last day with periods 2, 8, and 5 scheduled for tests.

Maine West students will have two consecutive Mondays off from school after the final exams are over. On Monday, January 25, School District 207 will hold a Teacher Institute Day. The following Monday, February 1, school will be closed in honor of Presidents' Day.
Any student who is planning to enter the Maine West Freshman Class next September is required to take the Differential Aptitude Test. The DAT will be given tomorrow at Maine West starting at 7:45 a.m. This will be the only day that the students will be allowed to take the test. For parents desiring specific information, the number to call is 827‑6176.
The fourth annual Maine West Invitational Debate Tournament will be held on Saturday, January 30, from 8 to 3:30. Over 40 Illinois high schools are expected to participate, including some of the top debate schools in the state of Illinois. Timekeepers are needed and any person interested should contact Mr. Robert Harris after school in room L‑104.
Mr. Keith Hooton, government teacher at Maine West, will be ending his career as a teacher to become a Secret Service agent of the United States government. He will be leaving at the semester.
