Walkout Proves Point;
SC Changes Policy

Jo KAMINSKI

"Would anybody care to make a statement before you leave? These were Larry Portman's words as a walkout occurred during a meeting of Student Council. The ironic thing was that that particular meeting was devoted to establishing better relations with the student body.

Previous to this meeting Larry Portman had invited several students who had a first period study to sit in on a Student Council discussion. Several students had good ideas and a serious intent to really offer their suggestions. This meeting had good results: it had ideas from Council and the student body and the whole meeting was filled with enthusiasm.

Unfortunately this meeting ended in a walkout by the visiting students. This resulted from a Student Council policy that no person who is not a member of council can speak during a meeting. Evidently these students felt they were serving no real purpose by just being there so they proved their point by politely leaving. This act had quite an impact on Council, and almost immediately a motion was made, seconded, and passed that Student Council meetings are now open to anybody having a first period study hall or PAR.

This is a good opportunity for each and every person to come to Council, present a motion, and see it work. This is your chance to support Council and take an active role in your school's activities. Student Council is asking for your help to make Student Council work as a combined unit of student council and the student body. It can and will work. The choice is yours.
