Jon Wins Honors As Science Student

Jon Baldo '71 has been named one of the top 40 students in the United States in the field of science. Jon had been working on a science project which he entered in the Westinghouse Science Scholarship contest. Since he was named one of the top students, Jon will receive an all expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., where he will compete for the top award of a $10,000 scholarship.

This is the first time a Maine West student has been in the top 40.

Mr. James Coburn, assistant principal, announced that a fence is being erected on Howard Street behind the baseball diamond for the protection of the students and other people.

Maine West also plans to install sidewalks along Howard Street and from Howard Street on Wolf Road if the Board of Education is able to finance the project.

Jerry Palarz '71 is now the president of Student Council. He has taken over the job since Larry Portman's graduation. Mike Maxa '71 took over Jerry's old position as vice‑president. He was elected at a Council election.

Brotherhood Society will be sponsoring its annual March of Dimes drive February 8‑15. Money will be collected by Brotherhood members. The goal is $500.

Last week during homeroom assemblies each class was introduced to our foreign exchange student from Ecuador, Maria del Carmen de la Torre. According to American Field Service regulations, a foreign exchange student is not allowed to speak before a large group before January. This is because of the language barrier each student faces in a new environment.

During the week of February 8‑14, Student Council will provide a Valentine's Day Post Office. All valentines should be brought to R‑103, and they will be delivered free of charge. They should include the student's name, homeroom teacher, and homeroom number.

A change in library attendance procedures has been put into effect. From now on the library is open to all students with a study hail or PAR any period of the day.
