MW To Offer New Course

Examining American history through literature will be the purpose behind the new course known as the American Studies Program. Starting in September, the American Sudies Program will be offered to those juniors who have an interest in interpreting history through literature written when these events occurred.

Four teachers will be involved with teaching this course. Mrs. Catherine Minkler and Mr. James Norgaard have been selected as the teachers from the English Department; Mr. Charles Dunn and Mr. James Martin will represent the Social Studies Department.

Mr. Dunn had this outlook concerning the new course:

The American Studies Program team has already begun meetings to map out a curriculum. We are all very excited over this new course. We probably will take a thematic rather than a chronological approach that would be geared to helping students understand the America of today."

Students interested in this course should contact their counselors since the enrollment plans call for only 130 juniors to be enrolled. Classes will be held two periods each day, and special concentration will be made toward large group lectures and small seminars. According to Mr. Martin, "This new method of teaching will help prepare students who wish to continue on in college."
