Tonight the Maine West varsity wrestlers will end their conference schedule as they travel to Niles North in hopes of winning their second conference meet of the season.
Last Friday night at Maine West, the Warrior grapplers lost their seventh meet in a row, as the Niles West Indians came from behind to defeat Maine West 22‑20.
The Warriors got off to a fine start as they took a 17‑0 lead. Picking up team points were Fred Gano '73, who won 6‑0 at 98 pounds; Bruce Beam '71 had no trouble at all with his opponent at 105 pounds as he won 19‑1 pushing his personal record to 15‑1. At 112 pounds Ken Gustafson '71 won 8‑0; Gary Bottari '72 got by his opponent 2‑0 at 119 pounds; and at 126 pounds Brad Vance '72 pinned his man at 2:33.

After that the grapplers went on to lose six straight matches, and going into the heavyweight match, Niles led 22‑17. In order to gain a tie with the Indians the Warriors needed a pin from heavyweight John Herter '71. However, it just wasn't in the books as Herter could only manage to win his match on an 8‑4 decision.
The loss to Niles West gave the Warriors a 1‑5 conference record and a 3‑8 overall tally.
On January 22 the varsity grapplers hosted their arch rivals the Maine South Hawks. Maine South won the meet over Maine West by a 26‑15 score.
Three weeks ago Maine West traveled to Deerfield and came out on the losing end of a 27-15 score.
West was within two points at one, time, 12‑10, but Deerfield won the next five decisions only to lose the final match heavyweight, in which Warrior John Herter pinned his opponent at 2:26.
