Heather, Sharon Excel in Music

Heather Brown '71 was chosen first oboe in the All‑State Orchestra. She was one of seven Maine West students to attend the festival held in Peoria. Sharon Siegfort '71, Maine West chorus member, received a perfect score on her audition. She was one of three students in the state to receive such a score.


Susan Wadsworth '71 has been named the 1971 Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow according to Mrs. Lucille Stiles, Home Economics Department chairman. Susan was chosen on the basis of her score in a written knowledge and attitude test on homemaking given to senior girls on December 1. She will receive a specially designed silver charm from the sponsor, General Mills. She is now eligible for state and national scholarships.


Mr. Richard Friedman, Republican mayoral candidate in Chicago, recently spoke to approximately 1,000 students. His appearance was in conjunction with the Forum program sponsored by the Social Science Department. He spoke on "The Challenge of Politics Today and What It Means to the Suburbs." He also explained that he is running for mayor because he wants to bring new ideas and people into the government. After his speech he was questioned by a Tri-S panel consisting of Bob Scarola '72, Klaus Hein '72, and Russ Jacoby '72.

Eugene Rydzinski '71 recently had a poem published in the "Youth Forum" section of the Chicago Sun‑Times. While he was a student in democracy class, Gene submitted the poem to his teacher, Miss Mary Fian, and it was subsequently published.


The choral and orchestra portions of the Maine West High School Music Department presented a concert February 19. Under the direction of Mr. Francis Vaupel, the orchestra program was highlighted by a concerto for string‑orchestra and piano. The chorus program was under the direction of Mr. Donald Lord and Mr. Grant Anderson.


There will be no Pow‑Wow this year because the Music Boosters are helping with the musical and have no time for the Pow‑Wow.
