Warriors Host Hawks,
Face Tough Challenge

Tonight Coach Gaston Freeman will pit the cagers against Coach Bernie Brady's Maine South Hawks. With the Warriors in first place in conference with a 12‑1 record and South in second with an 11‑2 mark, West must win tonight to win the conference championship or settle for a tie with our archrivals.

Led by Tom Kummer '71 and George Woodley '71, the cagers were victorious over New Trier West and Glenbrook North on February 5 and 6, respectively. Kummer's moves to the boards and Woodley's accurate shooting were the main factors in the 66‑54 win over New Trier and the 81‑50 score against Glenbrook.

Glenbrook South, on February 12, proved to be tougher competition for the Warriors. With the score close through the first three quarters, Maine West finally decided to play basketball. By utilizing the formula of Dennis Willison '71 feeding Bruce Kerr '71, the cagers pulled away from their opponents for a 68‑59 victory.

February 19 proved to be one of the most exciting nights for Maine West basketball. The bucketmen traveled to Deerfield to face a tough, well balanced team who, at the time, had a shot at the conference championship.

Willison's shooting and Fred Horn '71 and Kummer under the boards proved to be enough to hold Deerfield off. Deerfield used many different combinations but couldn't overtake the Warriors, who salvaged a 70‑65 victory, thus, knocking Deerfield out of the conference race.

Last Saturday Maine West walked over lowly Niles West. With many of Coach Freeman's cagers getting into the act, the Warriors finished the contest with a 70‑53 win and posted their twelfth conference tally.

The Junior Varsity, under Coach Robert Goerne, defeated New Trier West 78‑63 and Glenbrook South 59‑50 but were downed by Glenbrook North 73‑50.

Coach Roger Talbot, who replaced Coach Eugene Zuccarini, has led the sophomore squad to numerous victories since he has taken over the reigns. Joe Thimm '73 has developed into a fine offensive and defense player, and the all‑around play of the team has been impressive.

When Coach Talbot left as freshman coach, Coach Tom Fredricks, a physical education instructor, took over on the freshman "B" level.
