Dave, Skip Set Pace

By losing to Maine South on February 5 the varsity swimming team ended up with a record of 2‑6. The final score was 53‑42. The scoring started with a second in the 400‑yard medley relay followed by a one two finish in the 200‑yard free style by Dave Dettman '72 and Eric Dahl '71. Skip Parent '71 then came in first in the 200‑yard individual medley.

Ken Brown '72 then turned in a second in the 50‑yard free style, and Parent came in first in the 100‑yard butterfly. In the 400‑yard free style Eric Dahl '71 and Dettman finished onet wo. Larry Bierwirth '73 then came in first in the 100‑yard backstroke followed by a second in the 100‑yard breaststroke by Steve Dueball '72.

Although breaking a school record in the 400-yard free style relay, the relay team of Dahl, Russ Zage '71, Dettman, and Parent still came in second. On the sophomore level the team defeated Maine South by the score of 54-41.

Starting with a second in the 203-yard medley relay, Garyt Dahl '73 and Duane Peterson '74 then came in first and second in the 200-yard free style.

Led by Parent the varsity swimming team came in seventh out of nine teams in the conference meet at Deerfield on February 12. Parent had his second consecutive conference win in the 200‑yard individual medley. Parent set a new league record with a time of 2:08.0. He also came in third in the 100‑yard butterfly.

In districts on February 20 the varsity came in third place. Dettman came in third in both the 200 and 400‑yard free style and qualified for state. Parent also qualified for state with a second in the 200‑yard individual medley and 400‑yard free style. Zage, Bierwirth, and Dueball also came close to qualifying for state in their specialties.
