West Council Sponsors Annual Activities Week

Nine clubs participated in the annual Activities Week which was held September 22 - today. These clubs had displays in front of the cafeteria, before school and during all lunch periods, for students to view.

Cheryl Kuecker '73, who is social chairman of Student Council and who organized Activities Week, said that "Council had hoped for a better response from the clubs, but we hope that the students will become interested in at least these clubs and all the clubs at Maine West." The purpose of Activities Week was to give students time, which allowed them to join any of the clubs which they chose.

One of the clubs that participated in the Activities Week was the Bowling Club, whose sponsor is Mrs. Kathryn Malarkey. The Bowling Club bowls every Tuesday at Sims' Bowling Lane, and anyone may join. The Future Teachers Club, which is sponsored by Mrs. Joan Plock, also had a display. This club is for all those students who may have an interest in teaching.

Child Care Occupations and Food Occupations, which are both sponsored by Miss Shirley Kapina, also had displays in the rotunda.
G.R.A. (girls' recreational association), which is sponsored by Miss Royleen Tipton, also took part in the week. G.R.A. is a club for girls who would like to join in some extra-curricular physical activities such as archery, tennis, softball, fencing, volleyball, self defense and gymnastics.

Iota Chi Sigma, the speech club, which Mr. Daryl Schultz sponsors, was also one of the participating clubs. Iota Chi Sigma is a club in which students can do individual speaking, recite poetry, do original monologues and comedies and also do serious readings.

The Ski Club, which is sponsored by Mr. Roger Osborne and Mr John Craigle, also had a display. The purpose of Ski Club is to give students a chance to ski at a cost lower than usual. There will be a few weekend trips, and the club will also travel to Wilmot Mountain.

Mr. Schultz also sponsors WMTH, Maine's radio station, which had a display in the rotunda. The last of the nine participants in Activities Week was Student Council whose sponsors are Mr. Harvey Kelber and Mrs. Kay Keeley.
