'Westerner' Receives First In Newspaper Competition

The Westerner, Maine West's student newspaper, was awarded an International First Place recently in competition. The Quill an Scroll Newspaper Evaluation Committee judged the competition. Quill and Scroll is an international honorary society for high school journalists.

This award signifies a newspaper of substantial achievements.


Seniors who have not yet had their pictures taken will be given their last opportunity the week of October 1-8. Make an appointment with Mrs. Parker in the Deans' Office before October 1. After this, pictures will have to be taken in downtown Chicago at the photographer's studio before November 1.


On Wednesday, September 15, Seniors only were in attendance from 8 a.m.-12 noon to take the Iowa Tests of Educational Development. These tests, which are also taken by the incoming freshmen, are used to measure the educational progress that seniors have made since their freshman year.


The Maine West High School Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Gerald Hug, band director, received the first place award and trophy in the band competition at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.

This award signified the highest rating of first place and the best of class for the best band competing in the AA schools at the August 14 competition. Each participant received a ribbon.
Currently enrolled at Maine West are 3,244 students: 1,652 boys and 1,592 girls. The Sophomore Class is the largest with 405 boys and 429 girls, a total of 834 students.

Incoming freshmen number 827 students: 451 boys and 376 girls, the second biggest class. The Junior Class follows in size with 413 boys, 380 girls, a total of 793. The graduating class is the smallest with 790 seniors: 383 boys and 407 girls.


Maine West added a total of 12 new employees to their faculty-staff for the year of 1971-1972. Seven men and five women were employed for the new school season.

Three teachers joined the English staff: Mrs. Sue Lind, Mrs. Mariann Sullivan. and Mr. Ronald Mills. Miss Lou Homan, Mr. Robert Dillingham, and Mr. Julian Werth were added to the staff of the Physical Education Department.

Miss Mary Forrest replaced Miss Adams as the new counselor and Miss Constance Gordon is the new reading teacher. Mr. Thomas Castronova is now teaching Social Science here at Maine, and Mr. Ira Green is the new member of the Driver Education staff.

Mr. Donald Mack joined the faculty as an Industrial Education teacher. and Mr. Robert Shea joined the Science staff.


Freshman Class officers were elected on Friday, September 17. The class president is Jeff Dennis; the vice-president is Jim Andrews; the secretary is Carol Kent; and the treasurer is Laurie Armstrong.
