President Views Council Activities

By CLAUDIA WEED

The Student Council elections in the spring of last year caused a great deal of reaction among the students of Maine West. The key idea of the elections was to change some things at Maine West. I discussed some of these changes with the president of Student Council, Bill Mitchell '72.

This past summer the president, vice-president, and secretary, Bill Mitchell '72, Colleen Kelly '72, and Carol Gigante '72, respectively, went to camp for Student Council.

"At first I didn't like the idea. It sounded as if there was little information involved," Bill commented on his first reaction of the camp.

He continued to say that the camp explained parliamentary procedures, committee theory, committee projects, and how to be a more effective leader.
"The greatest goal for Student Council this year is to make Student Council the best possible means working towards getting the students what they want. Student Council is to provide communication from the students to the representatives to Council. There are a lot of students in Council and out of Council that have good ideas but are afraid to say them because they fear criticism. Creativity is stifled by such an attitude.

"In the past, most students have been apathetic to the general student welfare. This is an easily predictable reaction when the students of a school are subdivided into social factions, stereotyped in appearance and interests. These social factions offer security, but they stifle individually and promote misun-derstandings and divisions among the student body as a whole. In such a situation, there is little concern for the general student welfare; and therefore, very little is accomplished by an organization such as Student Council which attempts to promote this general welfare. Things can change. People have to realize everyone is not going to be exactly like themselves."
