Did You Know?

Did you know that located in the social science section of the library is a painting created by George Bethurem '67? A four year art student while attending Maine West, George majored in fine arts while attending Bradley University on a scholarship. George painted the large canvas as a senior. Later in his senior year, it was displayed at the Bradley Art Fair.

Here's something else you may have wondered about. That totem pole in the library was carved by Steve Geikow '71. It took Steve six months to make the totem pole out of a 10-foot fence post. Steve said he had a few problems while working on the art project. It broke in half, and a few pieces fell off while he was in the process of making it.

Congratulations to Gwen Russell and Claire Robertson! Last summer, the Sophomore, J.V., and Varsity Cheerleaders went to camp in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The camp is for cheerleaders of different schools all over the United States.

Gwen and Claire were awarded trophies for placing fourth and fifth, respectively, in the individual cheer competition. That's pretty good, girls, con-sidering that 88 girls competed. The entire varsity squad won four ribbons for two cheers, one pom-pon routine, and two songs.
If you walk to or from school, this piece of news may be of your interest. The city is in the process of installing a sidewalk that extends from Howard Street up to the exit on Maine West drive.

An art course has been constructed at Maine West this year which will be used by the various art classes and for other special events. Mr. George Blanas, chairman of the Art Department, hopes that the area will be a place where students will sketch, paint, and do sculpture. Since the area will be used for the displaying of student art work, it will also serve as a learning center for other students.

Finally, here's some news for all you "Blood, Sweat and Tears" fans. Miss Susan Koester, physical education teacher at Maine West, went out with Louis Solaff of the famous rock group.

Mr. Ron Modell, Jazz Band director at Northern Illinois University, got tickets for Miss Koester and her fiance. After the concert, the three went to Uno Number One, a restaurant in Chicago, for pizza, and then to Louis Solaff's apartment at the Astro Towers.
