| Hosting the Eighth Annual Center Meet on Saturday, September 18, the Warriors followed tradition by capturing the 22-team meet. The final standings showed the Warriors on top with 309 points. They were followed by Lyons, 304, and Maine South, 287. Lead by Gary Brenner '75, fourteenth place finish, the freshmen grabbed fifth in the opening event. Jim Loris '75 finished 32; John Bocskay '75 placed 51; and Steve Schaefle '75 and Norm Hillner '75 were 52 and 54. Minus their three top men, the sophomores still managed a third place finish. Glen Oland '74 was 11; Paul Frost '74, 19; Rich Schmit '74, 19; Brian Dunavant '74, 25; and Scott Johnson '74, 45. The Warriors finished second to Maine South on the junior varsity level. Greg Klebe '74, ran a strong third and was followed by Curt Henrich '73, 12; Joe Andren '74, 13; Scott Sedlack '73, 16; and Jim Nolan '73, 20. Maine West also had to take a back seat to Maine South in the B varsity race. Tony Winder '73, last year's junior varsity winner grabbed a fourth. Bob Berquist '72 placed ninth; Kevin Skahan '74 was 13; Fred Schultz '74 finished 14; and Steve Henderson placed 19. With Lyons and Maine West tied for the lead in the overall standings after the B varsity race the Warriors came through on the varsity level by taking second to Maine South. Kevin Wright '72 was the first Maine West runner through the chute as he finished fourth. Chip Barbour '73 places seventh. Dan Long '72 grabbed 20, and Dean Kamin '72 and Brad Frost '73 finished 35 and 38. Due to the injuries of key runners this year the majority of the practices have not been as tough as usual. Bill Barringer and Ross Blake have stated that aches or not, all runners will get down to work this week. Saturday, September 11, found the harriers opening their cross country season at Crystal Lake. The freshmen placed third out of the four teams entered. Loris was an eighth place finisher and the first Warrior to enter the chute after the mile and threequarter run. Brenner placed 13. Bocskay finished 15; Norm Hillner was 18, and Schaefle, who was near the leaders until a fall on the course, wound up 20. Paced by Klebe's first place finish, the victorious sophomores completely dominated the three-mile race. Skahan and Oland picked up a third and a fourth. Andrew placed seventh and Frost was ninth. The varsity, hoping to upset a strong Proviso West team, fin-ished a disappointing third. Fourth place finisher Wright was the first Warrior to enter the chute. Barbour placed seventh; Long picked up a 10; and Kamin and Frost, who ran below par, finished 12 and 19. Traveling to Prospect for their first of two dual meets this season on September 14, the Warriors trounced Prospect on all three levels. The freshmen, lead by Schaefle, swamped Prospect by a score of 15-50. Loris placed second; and Hillner, Brenneer, and Bocskay finished third, fourth, and fifth. This order could easily have been reversed as the leading runners made a wrong turn with less than a mile to go. Skahan grabbed a first as the sophomores whipped Prospect 19-44. Andrew finished third; Klebe was fourth; and Frost was fifth. On the varsity level the harriers racked up a 22-33 victory. Wright picked up a first and was followed by Kamin's third. Barbour's fifth, Long's sixth, and Frost's seventh. |
