Soccer Splits First Two Games, Looks Toward Better Season |
|||||||||
| Now in its second year the soccer team is beginning to cultivate its strength from the remaining seniors and up-coming juniors. After a trial year soccer has been recognized as a varsity sport. Therefore, Head Coach Ron Brown and his Assistant Coaches Dave Winter and Judd Werth have been working the men on a regular basis since late August. One member of the varsity team commented that this year's team is stronger in just about every area. Because of the amount of fellows coming out, the soccer men have a surplus of players. They have quite a few good players who just came on this year. The schedule is rough; but as always, there is the hope that the team will go to state. The soccer teams Maine West is pitted against this year are much the same as compared to last season. However, many of the more experienced teams have been excluded from the schedule. One of these was the competent rival Hinkley-Big Rock. Maine West previously ended with a 3-7-1 record. |
On Tuesday, September 14, Maine West was aired against St. Ignatius. The Warriors shut out the parochial school with a score of 2-0. Fred Campabaso '72 and Gerry Vaccarino '72 were the goal scorers for the Warriors. Quigley South sneaked past Maine West on Saturday, September 11, by a score of 2-1, Tom Felz '73 scored the single point. He was assisted by Max Hirsch '72. Coach Brown was pleased by the team's showing against one of the most experienced teams, Quigley South. The sophomore soccer squad did a little better than the varsity team. They achieved a 1-1 tie for their first game. The score for the Warriors was given by Steve Taylor with an assist from Steve Jacobson. Coach for the sophomores is Mr. Dave Winters. The Warriors face Oak Park tonight at Oak Park. |
