Column To Answer
Legal Questions

Much controversy has occurred in the last several years concerning the constitutional rights of freedom of speech and expression in schools. To insure that students are aware of their rights and to answer student legal questions, the Cook County Legal Assistance Foundation Inc., Brookfield, is offering a legal advice column to the Westerner and to other high school newspapers in Cook County.

The column will have a question-answer format. Mr. George Martin, lawyer at the foundation in charge of this project, said that the potential of the column depends on the kids. "It depends on what kind of questions they ask. If they ask safe questions, like what should they do when they get a parking ticket, the column could go on for centuries. If they start asking questions about student rights, expulsion, free speech, and dress codes, we might run into some issues the administration disagress with. . .
Any legal questions may be directed to the foundation - for example, timely questions about voting rights and consumer rights. Mr. Martin says that he will offer legal advice and arrange for an attorney if one is needed.

Letters should include names and phone numbers which will be withheld in the newspapers if so desired. The questions should be sent to the following address where the lawyers will respond to the student personally and also send the answer in the form of a column to area student publications.
