| The state gymnastics semifinals, held the weekend of March 11, had two Maine West representatives. Steve Schwab '72 competed in free exercise and received a 7.9 which placed him 22 out of 46. Steve Holmbeck '72 represented Maine West on the high bars and received a 7.35 which ranked him 24 out of 36. It is an honor to be represented down state. The school with the most points was Hinsdale Central. Arlington Heights came in second with Evanston third. Excitement reached a peak when Ted Marcy of Hinsdale received a 9.75 on the side horse. This not only gave him first place but it is the highest score ever to be given at any high school meet. For Maine West this past year, Steve Holmbeck received a third on the high bars in the Thornridge Invitational Meet. He placed second in districts on high bar and third in all around. His plans for the future include possibly attending Western where he wants to continue his gymnastics career. |
Steve Schwab placed second in districts for free exercise and fifth in conference. Steve would like to attend Southern Illinois University where he too hopes to advance his gymnastics background. Upcoming for graduating seniors from the area is the Central Suburban high school team competing against the gymnastics team of Circle Campus. The gymnastics team attends a summer camp each year for two weeks. Besides this, they practice here at school three times each week during the summer. Despite this, the strength of Maine's gymnastic team will diminish greatly after this year. There are nine graduating seniors this year with only three juniors to replace them. Upcoming are only six sophomores from this year. |
