Candidates Give Final Views; Results Announced Tonight |
||||||||||
| Student Council has two candidates for president this year and one for secretary. Cheryl Kueker '73 and Mark Eichhorn '73 are running for president, and Sue Anderson would like to be secretary. The results will be given tonight at the Election Jitney. Cheryl Kueker is running for president because "I am very interested in Student Council and helping the students get what is necessary for the betterment of Maine. I think my experience would qualify me for president, and that's why I ran." Mark feels that Bill Mitchell "has done a good job this year seeing that there is little interest from the student body and Council representatives." Cheryl doesn't think that just Student Council has suffered from lack of participation. "It's been all over. I don't feel that it is from not caring, it just seems that there is no time. Everybody is rushing around. This year Council felt frustration. What's missing in Student Council and in school is pride." Student Council has a lot of potential according to Cheryl because "It's the link between the students and the administration. Council serves as a service organization providing dances, movies, etc., but students should be able to go to Council to get something they want from the administration." |
Mark looks at Student Council's potential in the light of its present accomplishments. There has been the student lounge and in the past there was the dress code and the outdoor picnic area. "This year Student Council was loose - kids were left on their own," and according to Cheryl, "it just didn't seem to work. Next year more outlines should be laid down, and also representatives should receive better orientation so they will know how to write a plan and send it to the administration." Mark feels that there must be "more spirit among Council members in order to accomplish more. If the representatives to Council are not putting forth the effort, I feel the committees should be dissolved and the officers should take charge. This might not seem democratic, but it is probably the best way to accomplish anything. Sue Anderson felt really let down that no one else is running for secretary. "This way whether the students want me or not, they've got me." Sue would like to help Council next year by giving the students a chance to know about Council, to "not knock it until they've tried it. Unless I was in Council, I never heard enough about it to understand it." |
