Art Department Festival To Showcase Artwork

On Thursday, May 4, Maine West will hold its annual "Festival of Art." The festival will be held in the spectator gymnasium. It will be open to the public from 7 until 10 p.m. There will be no admission charged or tickets required. People will be allowed to come and go at their pleasure and browse by themselves.

The art festival has been an annual event for many years. It was originally held in collaboration with the Music and Drama Departments. There will be musical selections presented by the choral groups, bands, and orchestra. One act plays will also be presented by the Drama Department. These things would be in addition to the art exhibits. The daytime festival this year is strictly art.

This will be the third year in which the industrial arts will also be contributing to the displays. Photography classes will also play an active part by showing their work. The entire festival is an outgrowth of the spring open house.
One of the purposes of the festival is to act as a showcase to the community to display the artistic work taking place at Maine West. It shows the people the wide ranging curriculum that a student may participate in. This is the only opportunity the Art Department gets to do this.

The department likes to show a large cross section of art. For instance, an entire class' work might be displayed similar to what is done in the E-wing showcases. This would show the great variety in the art and also the variety in the students' approach to it.

Outstanding works are spotlighted, but this is not the main purpose of the festival. Last year well over 1,400 people attended. English classes will be allowed to attend the exhibits throughout the day.
