Awards Nights Honor Students For Outstanding Achievements

Each year, several departments honor individual students who have completed outstanding work during the year. The Science, Art, and Social Science Departments will make such awards this year.

On May 9, at their annual Awards Night, the Science De-partment recognized outstanding students in their department. The presented 355 awards to students in science classes.

The Science Department also made special awards. The American Cyanamid Award went to Jon Ferraiola '72, and the Bausch and Lomb award was given to Craig Weaver '72. The two boys were chosen because of their high academic ability and were chosen by the science teachers.

The Art Department w ill award approximately 200 art awards. The Art Awards Night will take place on Wednesday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Refreshments will follow the presentation of the awards.

Jane Eisfeldt and Jill Alke received scholarships to attend a one-week art workshop at Allerton Park, Monticello, Illinois, during the summer. It is sponsored by the University of Illinois.
In the Social Science Department, Russ Jacoby '72 was awarded a $300 scholarship for being winner of the constitution examination. Frances Kuecker '72 and Barbara Drensky '72 were announced as the two runners-up. This news was announced by the American Legion Post 36 in Des Plaines.

According to Mr. Emil Eck, chairman of the Legion examining group, "The choice was difficult to make in light of the excellence of the students and the quality of their efforts. I believe that more adults should see the fine young people in our school and community."

For the past 36 years the American Legion has sponsored the Constitution Contest as part of their educational efforts to get young Americans more acquainted with their heritage and the fundamental principles of democracy.

In addition to the $300 scholarship, the winner's name will be plated on a plaque in the library. Awards will also be made for Illinois Boys' State, Maine West Historical Society the top 10 historians from the school-and the outstanding history scholar of 1971-1972. These awards will be presented at the Social Science Department Honors Tea on May 30.
