Departments Fete Outstanding Work |

| On Wednesday, May 24, the Business Education Department held its annual awards night. The purpose of this night was to honor approximately 150 students for their outstanding work in one or more of the 23 Business Education courses offered at Maine West. The trophies won by Distributive and Office Education students at Maine West were displayed. In area Distributive Education contests Ken Funk '73 won second in advertising; Beth Shakespeare '72, third in job interview; and Scott Wagner '72, third in sales demonstration. Scott is also the Illinois vice-president of DECI. In area Office Education contests the following people won trophies: Kathy Klamer '72 in typing, Kristine Meseth '72 in accounting, and Cheryl Rydzinski '72 in spelling and clerical arithmetic. Jackie Dierking '72 won second in state competition in accounting. It was also announced that Bob Farson '72, a student in accounting and data processing, received a $1,950 scholarship from the Honeywell Corporation on Friday, May 12, to the Honeywell School in Chicago. The Art Department held its awards night on Wednesday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Approximately 200 awards were presented. Slides of the Art Festival were shown and refreshments were served afterwards. |
On Wednesday, May 17, Pep Club held an awards tea. The tea was held after school in the cafeteria. Punch and cookies were served. Pins and certificates were received by people who had attained a required number of points by attending athletic events throughout the year. The Music Department had its awards night on Tuesday, May 23. Four year awards were given out. This meant eight semesters of music. Enrollment in any music class was acceptable. Three Arion awards were also distributed. Awarded for orchestra was Nancy Krett for vocal, Shirley Frank; and Joyce Koelper for band. These awards were given to people who were recognized by their teachers. The students also voted for outstanding work in these categories. Sue MacDonald '72 was awarded the orchestra award, Carla Krebs '72, the vocal award, and Gayle Kremers '72, the band award. The awards night was held in the auditorium at 7:30 p.m. G.R.A., Girls' Recreational Association, held its award dessert on Tuesday, May 16, at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria. Awards were given to those girls who participated in extracurricular and team sports events. |
