'72-'73 Scheduling System An Important Change |
||||||||||
| By LAURIE CARLSON Indeed, there has been much talk and much speculation within the halls of Maine West concerning the new scheduling system taking affect next year. It can accurately be said, however, that it will be one of the greatest universal internal changes Maine West has employed in quite some years. A conference with Mr. James Coburn, assistant principal, revealed the following information which may be passed on as fact. Several weeks ago parents were given the opportunity to choose whether their child would or should receive either late arrival or early dismissal. This matter resulted in less than 25 parents who chose late arrival. There will still remain a reg-ular homeroom, and each day will consist of nine full periods. It is also correctly stated that almost all students will receive early dismissal by parental request. As with all things, along with change comes many problems and rough spots which must be worked out. One of the major ones is after-school extra-curricular activities. V-Show, next year, will have to wait; but it is hoped to soon continue in future years. |
No PAR or study halls is one of the options left up to the individual student. Most classes next year will be significantly larger, which I think is one problem we don't need right now. Open campus and open lunch will not be considered for next year. There will also be a need for fewer supervisors. With all things weighed equally and taken into consideration, I think this important change in the scheduling system for next year is definitely one for the better. One of the most obvious advantages of this plan is the fact that more students who may be presently unemployed, such as myself, will have the opportunity to find a job beginning early in the afternoon without having to enroll in the work program. With many of these new facts having been brought out into the open, I now hope that many new educated opinions based on these facts will be formed. |
