Diamondmen Fall to Notre Dame In First Round of District Play

The Warriors improved their conference record to 6-4 with two recent victories over Maine North and Niles North. The lat-est win was a 2-1 victory over Niles. The diamondmen had lost to them earlier this season.

West also handled North easily posting a 6-0 score May 12. Both teams had seven hits. Chris Bouchee '73 saved Frank Mitchell's '72 shutout by making a circus catch in right field. Two runs would have scored easily.

Those games marked the end of the Warrior season. The conference season is over and West is out of competition for the state title. Head varsity coach Mr. Al Carstens will have to try to put together a state winner again next year. The last time the Warriors won it all was in 1964.
The Warriors lost out early in their hid for the state title losing 1-0 to Notre Dame in district competition two weeks ago. Two double plays by the Dons, which ended scoring opportunities, and three hit pitching by Don pitcher Dick Allegretti spelled defeat for the diamondmen.

Only Fred Campobasso '72 was effective against him, walking twice and singling once. Mark Ackerman '73 pitched a four hitter, but got no support from the Warrior bats.

The winning run came in the seventh on a single and a double. Rich Luzinski, the brother of Greg Luzinski Philadelphia Phillies outfielder, scored the winning run.
