West Sponsors Olympic Trials

The final tryouts for the United States Men's Olympic Gymnastic Team will be held at Maine West, Friday June 16 and Saturday, June 17, beginning at 7 p.m. both evenings. This team will represent the United States in the 1972 Summer Olympic Games to be held in Munich, Germany, this August.

The 12 men who will compete at the tryouts will arrive in Des Plaines on Wednesday, June 14. Many plans have been scheduled for the men. The mayor of Des Plaines, Mr. Herbert H. Behrel, has planned a reception for the contestants on Thursday, June 15. Following the reception there is to be a publicity session.

The 12 gymnasts will then compete for the six available team positions beginning on Friday. The tryouts will be televised by the ABC "Wide World of Sports" program.

Three Canadian judges and two American judges will select the best six. The judges have been selected by the Olympic Committee.
Along with the five judges, there are many others who will participate in the big event. Several Maine West girls will serve as flashers for the tryouts. The Lettermen's Club will act as ushers. The Dad's Booster Club will take charge of the concessions. To assist with the preparations, Mayor Behrel has named a community committee.

Mr. Sid Drain, the head gymnastic coach at Maine West, is in charge of the event.

For those wanting to see the tryouts in person, the tickets will be open to the public. Since there is only a limited amount of space and available tickets, those planning to attend the final tryouts are advised to obtain their tickets well ahead of time. The admission for adults will be $3 for one session and $5 for two sessions. Students will be admitted for $2 a session or $3 for both of the sessions.
