Scholars Are Recognized

Two Maine West seniors were named National Merit scholars. These were Russell Jacoby '72 and William Mitchell '72.

Mr. Rider, principal, stated the following at the announcement of Merit Scholarship winners, "I wish to congratulate these two line young people on their achievements. Becoming a Merit Scholarship Winner is an honor which only few attain, and we at Maine West are proud and happy that Russell and William were selected to become recipients of this prestige award."

This award places both students in the top academic level of secondary school students throughout the United States. Russell has built an outstanding record, academically as well as in extracurricular activities. Because of his record, he has received a National Merit $1,000 Scholarship. This is a nonrenewable award payable to the winner through his college after his full-time enrollment in the fall semester.

Russell plans to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology in September. William has received a four year renewable scholarship as a Merit Scholar.
The Honeywell Institute of Technology issued a scholarship to Robert Farson '72, and this reward was well earned as expressed by Leonard Gingerella, institute manager, "You should feel proud of the achievement of your fellow classmate as the competition was keen, and he represented your school well."

The scholarship is redeemable for a Computer Science Prog r a m beginning prior to October 1, 1972.

Many companies give the responsibility of rewarding scholarships to the National Scholarship Commission. Interested students took the National Merit Test earlier this year. Many aspects of a student's background were considered.

One award was received by the Maine West Library Resource Center in honor of Douglas Lauffenburger, '71. who received straight A's his first semester at University of Illinois. The book: Energetics, Dynamics, Structure by J. A. Campbell was given by the University of Illinois Mothers' Association.
