Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor:
I realize that in the first issue of the Westerner, the staff was a little pressed for material, but the movies reviewed in the article did not receive due justice. Three paragraphs were devoted to "Willard," while only one was given to "Little Big Man."

I agree with the author's point of view that "Willard" was a waste of time and money; however, I believe the author should have allowed more space for "Little Big Man."

"Little Big Man," in my opinion, was an excellent movie, but the author seemed to make a mockery out of it by saying, "He tried many times to find himself by going from Indian brave to gunman to drunk and on and on," and other such statements. I can understand that this is the author's opinion also, but I'm sure many will disagree with him.

"The film is sometimes tragic, sometimes humorous, but mostly bloody." I also did not agree with this statement. Yes, it was bloody, but the movie was based on life, sentiment, and it gave a true image on the "old western" life of the Indians and white men.

I really appreciate the movie review article. It helps us to know which movies will be worth seeing, and which will be a waste of money.

Kathy Hartigan

EDITOR'S NOTE: Although the point that Kathy makes is a valid one, the arrangement of the story was not the fault of the writers. There was more to the movie reviews, but they had to be cut due to lack of space. And a review is an opinion of one person, not a wide range acclamation or denunciation of the picture. We were glad that at least one person in this school of 3,200 opinionated students gave us an insight into what the reaction was.
Dear Editor:
While reading the article concerning Activity Week, I noticed a comment by Cheryl Kuecker which said, "Council had hoped for a better response from the clubs I would like to know what in the world she expected. As I see it, Council is lucky that as many clubs participated as they did.

A notice was sent to our Key Club sponsor on Friday, September 17. The notice said, in effect, that Council would be setting up tables for displays on September 22 and 23 and would our club like to participate. It also stated that the notice had to be returned on that same day. With such short notice, our sponsor found it hard to contact me on this matter; and when we finally did get together, it was too late to plan anything.

I am sure this is the reason why so many clubs, Key Club included, did not participate. I further suspect that those clubs that did participate either had the good fortune to meet on Friday or somehow got an advance notice. The fact remains that Council's organization of this event was very poor, and I hope for our sake that this is not an indication of what the whole year will be like.
