Pom-Pon Challenges Cheerleaders: First Occurrence in Maine History

By JILL FALSTAD

For a twist in the times our colorful Porn-Pon girls will be battling it out on the football field under the expert coaching of Miss Lou Homan, October 21, at 7:30 p.m. The worthy opponents will he our vivacious Cheerleaders with their coach, Miss Royleen Tipton.

Arousing the fighting spirit of our Warrior girls from the sidelines will be Ken Steinken '72, captain, and Oscar Menoyo '72, and the rest of their cheerleading squad which is still undecided.

Never before in the history of any Maine school has such an event been held, and for only $.50 a whole evening of entertainment will be yours.

The half-time feature will include the fabulous Pom-Pon boys: Dave Dorn '72, captain; Frank Mitchell '72; Jeff Lig-gett '72; Jeff Heist '72; Leon Popowski '72; and Todd Weidner '72. The pep band, under the direction of Steve Kreiling '72, will play for the boys while they do a fantastic half-time show out on the field.
"Football player," Kathy Jordan '72, for the team of Pom-Pon girls, commented on the game, "I definitely think that the Pom-Pon girls will win because of their well-proportioned size and fabulous kicking ability."

The reason for the game being held is so that the Pom-Pon Squad and Cheerleaders will become self-supporting or more so than they are now. Debbie Brodd '73, a J.V. cheerleader, offered, "Maybe it will help to get the spirit up a little. It reverses the situations f o r once."

Flag football will be the type of competition the girls will partake in while out on the field. A flag is placed on either side of each girl's belt. Instead of tackling a flag is pulled out. Despite the absence of tackling, a rough exciting game is anticipated.

Miss Linda Haka, sponsor of the Pom-Pon Squad, commented enthusiastically about the upcoming game, "I sincerely hope that everyone at Maine will come out and support the game which may hopefully become a very enjoyable tradition at West."
