West Soccer Teams' Defense Stiffens But Offense Lacks Scoring Punch

Last Friday, September 24, the Maine West varsity soccer team took on the number one ranked team in the state, Oak Park, and took them into an overtime before Max Hirsch '72 put in a rebound off the goalies chest to win 1-0. This gave Maine West their second win of the season against three losses, which represents a good record since this is West's first year in their new conference.

Coach Ronald Brown attributes this fine record on their solid defense which has only allowed four goals to be scored against them in five games. Coach Brown also stressed that it was a team effort, but pointed out that Fred Schmidt '72 and John Ferraiolo '72 played an outstanding soccer game.

Coach Brown said, "I was pleased with the performance and quality of the players, although we do need some offensive punch."
This lack of offense was evident in their two recent losses, going down to defeat to Maine North 1-0 and losing to Lake Forest by a score of 1-0.

On the frosh-soph level the team has not faired too well, as they have scored only one goal in their three recent games. Losing 3-0 to Maine North and to Oak Park 1-0, they scored a goal last Saturday, but the result was only a 1-1 tie.

Coach Jud Werth said, "The lack of offense is due to the fact that these players are new to the sport and do not know too much about it."

The upcoming game will be held on Tuesday, October 12, in the stadium against Maine South. The soccer team now hopes the attendance will improve now that they will play in the stadium. The team also feels that the time at which the games start, 4:30 p.m., will bring more people.
