Festivities Climax Week As Queen Is Chosen |
||||||||||
| The beginning of the 1971-1972 Homecoming Week was marked by the start of floatbuilding on Thursday, October 21, from 3:30 until 7 p.m. Floatbuilding continued through the rest of the following week and ended on Thursday, October 28. The floats were all built around the theme, "Wild Wild West." All senior homerooms began the Homecoming queen elections by nominating two girls. The Senior Class was introduced to the Homecoming court in an assembly which was held Thursday, October 21. The following Tuesday, the juniors became familiar with the court in a similar assembly. Sophomores and freshmen assemblies were held Wednesday and Thursday, October 27 and 28. The Homecoming Parade will begin this afternoon after school at 3 and proceed through town. Mayor Herbert Behrel and Mr. Herman Rider, principal, will lead the parade. Former Homecoming Queen Jill Whetham '71 will be present for the parade. Tonight at the Maine West football field the Warriors will face the Glenbrook South Titans, beginning with the sophomore game at 6 and the varsity game at 8. The parade will once again be held between games, and at that time the winning float will be announced. The queen will be announced at half-time of the varsity game. To finish off the week tomorrow night, October 30, the Homecoming Dance, "Closer to Home," will begin at 8:30 and will end at 11:30. The dance is semi-formal and the tickets cost $2.50 a couple. The dance will be held in the auditorium and the group "Kelly" will be performing. The queen will be crowned between 9:30 and 10 that evening. "We all hope that Homecoming will be a success again this year. We've tried to plan a week that everyone could get involved in," said Kathy McCann '72, organizations committee chairman in Student Council and chairman of the committee planning Homecoming. |
Carol Gigante '72 will be hoping for a good feeling at Homecoming this year, full of brotherhood and happy memories, looking into both past and future. Pat Heller '72 says people are going to remember her as being "really crazy! I hope the excitement will be enough to involve everyone as it sure has done for me!" Pat is looking forward to the dance since it's a first for her. The dance holds the most excitement for Jan Kennedy '72 for the same reason. Being on the court is something really special for her. Jan hopes the spirit of Homecoming will extend to winning the football game. Diana Lambert '72 hopes she will be remembered "as a happy person, friendly, and at peace with myself and with everyone." This is Diana's last dance since she isn't going on to college. She hopes there will be no classifications this Homecoming, "just fun for everyone." Sandy Beyer '72 said she was completely shocked when she heard she made the court. She got to school late, and the first thing she did when she found out she made the court was to take off her coat because she still had it on. For Debbie Jacobs '72 Homecoming means the game. "I just wish everyone could find some of the spirit that's been dying out so much." She's glad that the queen is announced at the game, because "it kind of takes away from the excitement otherwise." "Happy" is how Betty Sloan '72 was through her four years at Maine, and that is how she wants to be remembered. She likes Homecoming where everyone is "all together working on floats and stuff." She is glad that the queen isn't announced at the pep assembly because "it has no style ... no class." Kathy Bos '72 especially wants to bring back "the color, excitement, and pageantry" from her first three years of Homecoming. She is really looking forward to the half-time because she feels, "The whole school is represented then in one way or another." Meeting a lot of new people is one advantage of being on the court for Mary Kay Long '72. She liked homecoming her sophomore year because her sister was on the court. The best thing for her would be winning the float contest four years in a row. |
