Wanted: Clean Air

Editor Proposes Anti-Pollution Contest

Air pollution is a phrase that many people are tired of hearing, as are poverty and the war in Viet Nam. If one is not directly in touch with the poor or hasn't got a loved one fighting in the war, he is just "politely concerned."

A "politely concerned" person will speak out against these ills of society, but he won't attempt to heal them.

Perhaps the major question concerning air pollution is where or what is the source? Real pollution is unseen because it starts inside of people. It begins in the way we treat each other-with the discourtesy we show one another.

Air pollution is often times referred to as an evil curse that was zapped upon mankind. In actuality man brought about this condition when he began to live his life for his own benefit completely disregarding the life of his neighbor. And conversely the neighbor probably lives his life just as selfishly. So before we can
hope to improve man's environment, we should try to improve MAN and his interaction among others of his kind.

We have now established that air pollution is not only present on a local level; it is present on a very personal and individual level. To bring awareness of the air pollution problem to our readers the Westerner would like to propose a contest.

Any student, club, or faculty member may submit a cartoon, essay, poem, or photo for consideration. The topic should be that of air pollution, and any approach may be taken. For example, maybe you disagree with the idea that we found to be the cause of air pollution. If so, you have the basis for an entry.

All entries will be judged by the Westerner staff and the winning contribution will be published in the next issue of the paper.
