| By SHANNON DEMPSEY "See No Evil" starring Mia Farrow, is a horrifying thriller about a blind girl and the terrifying situations she encounters. As the picture begins, we see Miss Farrow returning to her villa after a year's absence. She had been hospitalized during this time from an accident in which she was thrown from her horse. As a result she was blind and the horse was shot. She is just getting to feel her way around again with the help of an aunt, uncle, and cousin who live with her. One day her boyfriend from a nearby ranch takes her to his house for lunch. While she is gone, her relatives are all sadistically murdered. We can, of course, see them lying murdered in their various locations of the house. The suspense builds as we wait for Miss Farrow to stumble (so to speak) upon them. The photography used here is incredible, and the way it was used to heighten and prolong the suspense built up was perhaps the most intriguing part of the film. |
Miss Farrow does an excellent job of acting - one can feel her terror, her helplessness, and her unbelievable will to survive no matter what happens. The ingenious way the movie is photographed also hides the murderer's identity from the audience until the surprise ending. The film also boasts of some beautiful scenery - the English countryside in autumn with its gold, brown, and red tones makes for some breathtaking settings. The only criticisms one might find in this movie would be, whether it is humanly possible for any young girl of Miss Farrow's seemingly fragile appearance to withstand the many ordeals she does in the movie. Surely she must have iron-cast insides! Secondly, although obviously patterned after "Wait Until Dark," in which Audrey Hepburn played the blinded heroine, it lacked the strong plot and story line of this latter excellent film. However, if one's intent is to see a good shocker (guaranteed to give you at least one week of nightmares), then go see "See No Evil." |
