Gridmen Fall to Deerfield, G.B.N., Hope To Improve for Homecoming

After their first five games of the season, Maine West is still looking for their first win of the season. Their two recent losses were against top seeded Glenbrook North, 27-7, and last Saturday against Deerfield, 15-12.

In the second quarter Deerfield had the ball on their own 20-yard line. Mike Darraugh was open at midfield, and it turned out to be a crucial 80-yard scoring pass. The next time Deerfield got the ball, a sideline pass was intercepted by Doug Dalbke '72 for a 35-yard scoring play. Maine West missed the extra point.

When Deerfield got the ball again they marched downfield to the Maine West 27-yard line. From there the Deerfield quarterback Obberreider handed off to the fullback Brown, w h o rambled 27 yards for the score. Then Deerfield faked the extra point attempt by passing to Brown, who went in for the score to make it 15-7.

Maine West's drive late in the second quarter was capitalized on a good pass from Frank Mitchell '72 to Craig Zaleski
'72 for a 21-yard scoring play. Then Maine West tried for the two-point conversion but failed. Deerfield led by a score of 15-12 at the half.

The second half was scoreless; perhaps the inclement weather may have had something to do with it. The conditions were hurting both teams, and consistent turnovers could not make a substantial drive for either team.

Coach Al Carstens said, "We are a first half ball club. We can sit with anybody in our conference for the first half; but they just beat us in the second half because we lacked three points. We lack depth and size, and injuries have hurt us a lot. If we could improve on these three points, then we could challenge Niles West or Glenbrook North."

On the sophomore level Maine West buried Glenbrook North, 42-6, but lost to Deerfield, 28-16.

Tonight will be Maine West's Homecoming game. The Warriors will be dueling Glenbrook South.
