Harriers Capture CSL Title, Look Upon State Sectionals

With varsity and sophomore runners capturing first place and the freshman team finishing second, Maine West repeated as Central Suburban League cross country champions on Saturday, October 23, at Locust Park, Wilmette.

Scoring for the varsity on the damp, overcast day were Kevin Wright '72, who took second, Chip Barbour '73 sixth, Dan Long '72 twelfth, Tony Winder '73 fifteenth, and Dean Kamin '72 twenty-third.

Sophomores who scored were Glen Oland '74 first, Brian Dunavant '74 second, Paul Frost '74 seventh, Joe Andrew '74 eighth, and Greg Klebe '74 eleventh.

Leon Williams '75 led the frosh squad by hitting the chute eighth and was followed by Gary Brenner '75 seventh, John Boskay '75 sixteenth, Joe Paul '75 seventeenth, and Norm Hillner '75 eighteenth.

The varsity and sophomore squads competed against teams from 18 other schools in the Libertyville Invitational on October 16. The varsity finished fourth with 100 points to Zion Benton's 99, Morton East's 94, and Fremd's 73. The sophomores tied Fremd for second with 84 points. Glenbard East took first with 73 points.

Top runner for the varsity squad was Wright who finished seventh. Other Warrior runners were Barbour ninth, Long eighteenth, Kamin thirty-first, Winder thirty-fifth, Scott Sedlack '73 forty-ninth, and Frost fifty-first.

Skahan '74 led the sophomores with a twelfth place finish. He was followed by Oland fourteenth, Dunavant sixteenth, Frost seventeenth, Klebe twenty-fifth, Andrew twenty-eighth, and Richard Schmit '74 thirtythird.

Maine West swept a triangular with Maine North and Maine South at home on Thursday, October 14.
The varsity defeated Maine South by a close score of 27-28 while Maine North forfeited. The sophomores edged South by a score of 15-38 and North by a score of 21-38. The freshmen took South in a 27-29 decision and North with a perfect 15-50.

The five varsity scorers were Wright second, Barbour third, Kamin seventh, Long eighth, and Sedlack tenth.

Dunavant came in first for the sophomores and was followed by Oland second, Frost fifth, Andrew sixth, and Schmit seventh.

The freshmen squad was led to victory by Williams '75, who copped first. Following him were Brenner, who took second, Paul Mademann '75 seventh, Loris '75 eighth, and Hillner ninth.

Maine West faced Elk Grove and Forest View for another triangular as they traveled to Elk Grove on Tuesday, October 12. The varsity defeated Elk Grove 26-33 but lost to Forest View by a score of 25-31. The sophomores were victorious over both schools defeating Elk Grove 23-38 and Forest View 15-50. The freshmen also beat Elk Grove and Forest View by scores of 15-50 and 25-32.

On Saturday, October 9, Maine West competed against 19 other schools at the Oak Park Invitational. The sophomores took a first, the junior varsity a second, the varsity a fourth, and the freshmen a fifth.

The varsity, sophomore, and freshman Warriors defeated Glenbrook South and Deerfield at Glenbrook South on Thursday, October 7.

The Maine West harriers had a bad day earlier that week when they went to Conant on Tuesday, October 5. All three levels were defeated by Fremd, and only the varsity and frosh squads defeated Conant.

The varsity, sophomore, and freshman squads each won 8 and lost 0 in conference cornpetition. Overall this season the varsity was 12-3, the sophomores were 13-2, and the freshmen 14-1.
