Central Suburban League Adds Three New Teams

By KEVIN WRIGHT

In 1959 when Maine West first opened it was admitted to the Interim League. Maine West was not officially added to the league until the following year. Proviso West, Wheaton, East Leyden, Glenbrook, Willowbrook, West Leyden, and Prospect competed on the varsity and frosh-soph levels.

Glenbard East, Waukegan, Morton West, and Highland Park competed only on the freshman and sophomore levels.

In 1962 the 12 Interim League teams were Prospect, Glenbrook North, Morton West, Maine West, Proviso West, Willowbrook, Niles West, Glenbard East, Wheaton, Deerfield, East Leyden, and West Leyden.

From the Interim League the Interim Suburban Association was founded. This Association brought together the Suburban League, Des Plaines Valley League, Mid Suburban League, West Suburban League, and Central Suburban League. These five leagues were governed by the same rules and laws.

The Interim League split into two divisions in 1963. They were the Mid Suburban and Des Plaines Valley. The Mid Suburban was made up of Maine West, Deerfield, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, Prospect, and Forest View.

In 1964 the Mid Suburban League consisted of Maine West, Niles North, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South, Wheeling, Deerfield, Forest View, and Prospect.

Only six teams were in the Mid Suburban in 1965. They were Palatine, Wheeling, Forest View, Conant, Prospect, and Maine West.

The league expanded to seven teams in 1966. They were Arlington, Wheeling, Forest View, Palatine, Conant, Prospect, and Maine West.
Maine West joined Maine South, Deerfield, New Trier West, Niles North, Niles West, Glenbrook North, Glenbrook South in the Central Suburban

League in 1967. This was a crippling blow to Maine's sports program as it broke traditional rivalries with Palatine, Forest View, Conant, and Prospect.

Rivalries help high school sports tremendously. When a team takes on one of its most hated enemies the players, student body, faculty, and community all come to life. Playing a familiar school year after year helps promote school spirit. Maine North joined the group in 1971.

The outlook for 1972-1973 finds Maine in a two-divisional setup in the Central Suburban League. Maine West will be in Division A for the football, basketball, and basketball seasons. The setup for the other sports has not yet been determined.

Other teams in Division A are the Deerfield Warriors, Maine South Hawks, Niles North Vikings, Niles West Indians, and the Niles East Trojans.

Maine South has the largest enrollment of the Division A teams with 3,500. Following are Maine West 3,350, Niles West 3,100, Niles North, 2,650, Deerfield 2,500, and Niles East 2,300,

The Highland Park Little Giants and the Maine East Demons join the Maine North Norsemen, New Trier West Cowboys, Glenbrook South Titans, and the Glenbrook North Spartans in Division B.

Maine East leads in the enrollment category with 3,500. Following are New Trier West with 2,700, Highland Park with 2,500, Glenbrook South's 2,300, Glenbrook North's 2,250, and Maine North's 1,400. Highland Park and Niles East transferred from the Suburban League and Maine East transferred
from the West Suburban League. These teams were added to give the league an even number of teams.

Because the Suburban League lost two of its teams, it is necessary to give the remaining six Suburban League teams one game in each of the Central Suburban League's divisions.
