Gridmen Lose Two To Niles, Glenbrook

Fighting a losing battle against a bitter wind was the way the Warriors spent last Saturday afternoon on the Niles West football field. After a cold four quarters, the Warriors walked away with a 37-22 defeat.

After a jarring tackle on the first play of the game by Mark Eichhorn '73, the Niles West Indians recovered to run 88 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the first quarter.

The Warriors bounced back with a real exciting series. Af-ter downing the ball on the 8-yard line, Maine ground out an impressive 78 yards which ended with a 2-yard run in by Frank Darras '72. Frank Mitchell scored two with an end around.

With a hopeful outlook on the remainder of the game, the Warriors had 22 points stolen from them during the second quarter. This was with the fierce wind stinging them in the face. Niles was held to only 8 points during the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was all Maine West, as they did an impressive job of scoring against the Indians. One touchdown was scored by a one-yard dive in by Frank Mitchell over the middle. Then Mitchell ran for an extra two points.
This made the score 16 to 37. With still a long way to go, Jeff Liggett '72 intercepted a pass which led to a touchdown by Mitchell with the try for extra point by Frank Darras on the run, unsuccessful.

Maine got many bad breaks in the penalty category with a gruesome 95 yards walked off against them. Niles got away with only 35 yards. The team did come out ahead in the total offense, but this was not enough as the Warriors could not come from behind after losing their one-point lead in the first quarter.

Tight end Craig Zaleski '72 had a good afternoon as he combined with quarterback Mitchell for five big receptions.

On Friday, October 29, the Warriors faced Glenbrook South in this year's homecoming game. Trailing only 7-6 at the half, Glenbrook exploded for 20 points in the second half. The final score was 27-6 in favor of Glenbrook.
