Runner's Win CSL Title; Squad Misses at State Finals

After the varsity cross country squad had captured the Conference title, they traveled to the Crystal Lake Sectional Cross Country Meet. The meet was held at hilly Veterans Acres in Crystal Lake on Saturday, October 30.

In order to go down state, the cross-country squad had to finish in one of the top three places, but placed in seventh.

Scoring for Maine West on Saturday was Chip Barbour '73, who finished tenth and represented Maine West downstate in the finals at Peoria.

Hitting the chute next were Kevin Wright '72, placing thirty-fourth; Dan Long '72, thirty-sixth; Tony Winder, '73, in seventy-second place; and Dean Kamin '72, one hundred and seventh. Sophomores on the varsity squad who placed were Kevin Skahan in sixty-fifth and Brian Dunavant, one hundred and sixth.

The three teams from this district, who went downstate, were Maine East, Forest View, and Fremd.

Two lucky breaks let Barbour come in tenth. The first incident occurred when an Elk Grove runner, with about one- quarter of a mile left, walked up the hill so Barbour was able to catch him and remain ahead of him for tenth place.
At the end of the race, Gary Les of Notre Dame collapsed about 50 yards from the finish. Picking himself up he staggered a few feet more, but collapsed once again. He then crawled to the chute, pulling himself over the finish line. Gary Les finished twelfth in the sectional.

Maine West was able to go to the sectionals by finishing third of 18 teams at the District meet held here on Tuesday, October 26. Maine East was the top team in the district and in the sectional with 60 points. Then came Notre Dame with 108, Maine West with 120, followed up by Elk Grove and Forest View.

Scoring for Maine West were Kevin Wright '72, fourth; Chip Barbour '73, thirteenth; Dan Long '72, twenty-eighth; Tony Winder '73, thirty-seventh; and Kevin Skahan '74, in forty-first place.

On Saturday, November 6, Chip Barbour placed ninety-first out of over 200 runners. Craig Virgin of Lebanon finished first and set the course record. York won the state championship with Maine East coming in third.
