Soccer Ends Season; Coach Brown Pleased

The end of the 1971 soccer season found the Maine West varsity team in seventh place out of eight teams, ahead of Maine North. The Central Suburban League is one of the toughest leagues in the area, and there isn't an easy team in it.

This was the Warriors' second soccer season, and they have developed a solid defense. When asked if he was pleased with the way his team played this season, Coach Ronald Brown said, "It's hard to say; there were some interesting games. I was pleased with some aspects."

The Warriors played several fine games that were lost by one goal. The defense was strong all year, but the offense proved weak at times. The Warriors' finest game was probably against Oak Park, the first ranked team in the state, when they beat them 1-0.
Despite the team's seventh place finish, John Ferraiolo '72 of the Warriors was selected to play on the second team of the All-Conference team. Joe Hanley '72 and Fred Schmidt '72 received honorable mention honors. Schmidt was voted third best goalie in the conference.

Coach Brown believes if the Warriors had had a better record, Schmidt could have placed higher. Schmidt played several fine games holding the opposing teams to very few goals. He played a fine game when he shut out top-ranked Oak Park, 1-0.

A change will take place next year as there will be three levels of soccer. There will be freshman, sophomore, and varsity teams, as compared to the frosh-soph and varsity teams this year. There are no remaining games this year, but there are more exciting season to look forward to. Coach Brown sees good talent coming next year and hopes for a better record than that which was compiled this year.
